The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has directed workers in the six area councils of the FCT to commence an indefinite strike starting December 1.
This directive was issued by the FCT NLC Chairman, Knabanyi Adalo, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
Adalo explained that the decision follows a resolution by the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) during its meeting on November 8 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The NEC had called on area council chairmen across the FCT to implement the new national minimum wage of ₦70,000.
However, Adalo noted that the council chairmen have failed to act on this directive, prompting organized labour to convene a State Administrative Council meeting on November 12. At the meeting, it was unanimously agreed to adhere to the national directive and proceed with the strike if the minimum wage is not implemented by the end of November.
He emphasized that the refusal to implement the new minimum wage violates the law and shows a lack of regard for the welfare of workers.
“The State Administrative Council also expressed deep frustration over the persistent delay and outright refusal by the area council chairmen to pay pending entitlements, including outstanding arrears owed to primary school teachers,” Adalo said.
In line with this, all workers in the six FCT area councils have been instructed to embark on the strike from December 1 until further notice.
