Investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has been detained by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s arrest on Friday through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, @fijnigeria, stating that he has been in the Army’s custody for three days.

Soyombo recently made headlines for exposing alleged corruption and smuggling activities involving officials of the Nigeria Customs Service at the nation’s borders.

In a statement, the FIJ demanded Soyombo’s immediate release and decried the growing threats to press freedom in Nigeria. “The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days. Journalism is not a crime,” the organization said.

Fisayo Soyombo is renowned for his investigative reporting, which often uncovers corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations. His arrest has sparked concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in the country.
