An unfinished five-story hotel building collapsed early on Thursday in Ibadan, injuring no less than seven people to varied degrees.

The damaged building was located next to a new generation bank in the Awosika neighborhood of Oyo State’s Ibadan North Local Government Area.

Although the cause of the collapse could not be determined right away, investigators suspect the use of subpar building supplies.

Eyewitness said the passersby who quickly raised alarm on the incident made people in the neighborhood storming the scene.

Goditta Mandalla, an eyewitness, reported that the incident occurred at 5 AM and that a loud boom brought other neighbors to the scene.

He further stated that the rescue squad was working really hard to clear the wreckage in search of other survivors as the toll of injured people reached seven.

Another source claimed that before to the arrival of the authorities’ rescue teams, the incident drew rescue teams from the neighborhood and bystanders to the area.

After the terrible incident, a team of rescuers from the Federal Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Authority arrived at the scene to conduct an immediate assessment.

The panel determined that the contractor’s use of subpar materials was what caused the event.
