Flooding has caused at least 1,000 family evictions, the destruction of 60,000 acres of crops, and 500 home losses. in Bauchi State’s Jama’are Local Government Area.
The disclosure was made during a plenary session by Saleh Muhammad, a member of the State House of Assembly who represents the Jam’are Constituency.
He mentioned that a boat accident that occurred in the neighborhood also claimed the lives of five people.
The lawmaker claimed that the displaced family had taken refuge in nearby villages, schools, government buildings, and mosques after 60,000 hectares of farmland with a variety of crops worth several million naira were destroyed.
He requested that the House swiftly push the State administration to assist the flood victims.
Saleh Bura explained, “Jama’are town and its surrounding villages had been hit by a very devastating flood that rendered several people homeless. The flood is estimated to have destroyed over 500 houses and displaced about 1,000 families.
“It also ravaged more than 60,000 hectares of farmlands and destroyed farm produce estimated at several hundreds of millions of naira.”
The lawmaker bemoaned the fact that citizens are currently finding refuge in nearby villages such as Yola, Dakodako, Gongo, Gilar, Sabongari, Jogayel, Jabbori, Bodinga, and Guda as well as public schools, government buildings, mosques, and others.
The representative said that Jama’are Local Government Area had been regularly experiencing flooding during the rainy season and added that the community was at risk because there was a river nearby.
The proposal didn’t need to be addressed further, the Speaker, who oversaw the meeting, underscored, because the House had already had comparable discussions. The motion was approved by the entire House.
