….VC Harps On Skills, Entrepreneurship
The University of Offa (UNIOFFA), Kwara State, on Wednesday, February 4, 2025, held an orientation programme for 352 newly admitted students.
The students were charged to embrace skills acquisition and entrepreneurship alongside their academic pursuits.
The fresh students were admitted into the Faculty of Science and Computing, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Education for various undergraduate programmes.
Departments under the Faculty of Science and Computing include Cyber Security, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Microbiology, and Physics with Electronics.
The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences has Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Mass Communication, and Political Science, while the Faculty of Education offers Economics Education, Social Studies Education, and Vocational Education and Technical Education.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kazeem Alagbe Gbolagade described their admission as a rare opportunity and assured them that the university’s management was committed to making them future-ready graduates rather than mere certificate holders in search of jobs.
He urged the students to draw inspiration from accomplished entrepreneurs such as Mrs. Funsho Alakija, Africa’s second richest woman, Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Tony Elumelu, CFR, and other accomplished entrepreneurs.
He said that their success stories were built largely on entrepreneurship, innovation and resilience, not certificates alone.
Prof. Gbolagade also stressed that the university has zero tolerance for any form of harassment, encouraging students to promptly report any such incidents.
He assured them of protection and fair handling of complaints.
President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Comrade Awosanya Adeshina Oluwagbenga cautioned the fresh students against social vices such as cultism, alcoholism, drug abuse, examination malpractice and other negative behaviours capable of derailing their academic journey.
In a lecture, the Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies, Dr. Oluwaseun Oladeji enlightened the students on academic discipline and guided them on how to calculate their Grade Point Average (GPA), emphasizing the importance of consistent performance.
The orientation programme was attended by key principal officers and staff of the university, including the Registrar, Mr. Salaudeen Jibola Oyewale; Ag. Dean, Faculty of Science and Computing and Director of Academic Planning and Institutional Research, Dr. Abdulrazak Agboola Bello; Ag. Dean, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Dr. Pinheiro Oladimeji Simon; Coordinator of Student Affairs, Mr. Olaogun Fuhad Adedayo; Coordinator of Diploma Programme, Mr. Abiola Mohammed Usman; Mrs. Aminah Nike; and the SRC President, Comrade Awosanya.
Others in attendance were the Protocol Officer, Mr. Kadiri Oloso; the Varsity Orator and Mass Communication lecturer, Mr. Babatunde David Adebayo; and the Library Coordinator, Mr. Tajudeen Lateef.
The programme marked the formal integration of the new students into the university community and underscored UNIOFFA’s commitment to academic excellence, character building and entrepreneurial development.
