The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami Gomo III, has called on the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Zuru Emirate to stem the rising tide of banditry ravaging communities in southern Kebbi State.
The traditional ruler made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), in Abuja, warning that worsening insecurity was exacting a heavy toll on agriculture, mining activities and rural trade across the emirate.
According to the Emir, repeated attacks by armed groups have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of farming families and a sharp decline in private investment in what he described as one of Kebbi’s most resource-endowed zones.
He argued that the security challenge required decisive federal intervention, including the deployment of additional military formations and modern combat equipment, to restore confidence and unlock the area’s economic potential.
“Our emirate is richly endowed with fertile land and solid minerals, yet banditry has denied our people the benefits of these resources,” the monarch said, stressing that urgent action was needed to stabilise the area.
While commending Governor Nasir Idris for what he described as a firm and consistent approach to tackling insecurity, the Emir maintained that sustained federal backing was indispensable to achieving lasting peace.
He urged the Federal Government to reinforce the state government’s efforts, noting that security remained the foundation for development and social stability.
Responding, the Defence Minister described the Emir’s intervention as an example of responsible and patriotic leadership, assuring him that the request for a military base would be carefully considered.
General Musa acknowledged the persistent security threats in parts of the North-West and underscored the importance of collaboration between state authorities, traditional institutions and security agencies.
He also praised Governor Idris for maintaining regular engagement with security stakeholders, adding that coordinated action remained the most effective strategy against criminal elements.
Zuru Emirate occupies a strategic position within southern Kebbi’s agricultural belt and mineral corridor, areas that have increasingly come under pressure from armed groups operating across the wider region.
The Emir was accompanied on the visit by a high-powered delegation, including former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd.), Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Magoro (retd.), and a member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Tukura.
