The African Action Congress (AAC), Osun State chapter, has condemned the alleged withholding of local government allocations due to the state, describing the action as undemocratic and a clear violation of the 1999 Constitution.
In a press statement issued on Saturday and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Akinlade Semiu, the party accused the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of seizing 10 months’ local government allocations belonging to Osun State, valued at about ₦131.5 billion.
According to the AAC, the funds have allegedly been withheld since March 2025 through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, despite a Supreme Court ruling which, it said, declared such action unlawful and unconstitutional.
The party described the development as a manifestation of what it termed the Tinubu administration’s disregard for democratic principles, particularly the rule of law, separation of powers and institutional independence.
“The continued seizure of Osun local government funds is not only ridiculous but also exposes the Federal Government’s contempt for democracy and constitutional order,” the statement read.
AAC further alleged that since its inception, the APC-led Federal Government has consistently undermined checks and balances, reduced key institutions to “mere appendages,” and shown a pattern of disobeying court orders while suppressing dissenting voices.
The party warned that the withholding of local government allocations has crippled grassroots governance in Osun State, effectively distancing government from the people and worsening the living conditions of citizens.
“The action of the Federal Government has paralysed local government activities and taken governance away from the people, contrary to the spirit and letters of the Constitution,” the statement added.
AAC also cautioned the Attorney General of the Federation to uphold his constitutional responsibility as the chief law officer of the country, noting that the pursuit of political vendettas often ends in consequences, citing the experience of a former Attorney General, Abubakar Malami.
Calling for decisive action, the party urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to “boldly pursue this injustice” using all lawful means available to him as the chief executive of the state.
It also appealed to Osun indigenes at home and in the diaspora not to remain silent, stressing that the withheld allocations belong to the people of the state and should not be subjected to what it described as “APC gimmicks” at the expense of public welfare.
The statement reaffirmed AAC’s commitment to democratic ideals and pledged continued advocacy against policies it considers oppressive and unconstitutional.
