At least six farmers have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected armed bandits in Unguwar Wawa community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, heightening fears over the worsening security situation in rural parts of the state.
The attack, which occurred late on Friday night, was said to have taken place around 10 p.m. when gunmen invaded farmlands on the outskirts of the community and opened fire on farmers who were still at work.
Details of the incident emerged on Saturday through a report by Bakatsine, a conflict and crisis journalist known for tracking insecurity in Nigeria’s north-west and north-central regions. According to the account, the assailants struck swiftly and fled the area shortly after the attack, leaving behind devastation, fear and mourning.
Residents of Unguwar Wawa described the incident as yet another grim reminder of the vulnerability of farming communities, many of which now operate under constant threat. The killings have further deepened anxiety among locals, who say they feel increasingly exposed to violent attacks with little or no protection.
Community sources lamented that farmers, already struggling with economic pressures, are now forced to choose between abandoning their livelihoods and risking their lives. They called for immediate and decisive intervention by security agencies to stem the tide of attacks and restore confidence in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Niger State Government nor security authorities had issued an official statement on the incident.
The latest attack adds to growing concerns about insecurity across Niger State, where banditry and violent crimes have continued to undermine agricultural activities and rural stability, despite repeated assurances of improved security measures.
