The Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has assured party faithful that it will not repeat the internal missteps that cost the party dearly in Ekiti State, insisting that all its candidates for the 2027 general elections will emerge in strict compliance with the law.
The assurance followed the recent exclusion of the PDP from the list of candidates cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State, a development widely attributed to protracted internal wrangling and failure to meet statutory timelines.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Oyo PDP Caretaker Committee, Prof. Abdulrahman Akinoso, said the party had drawn critical lessons from the Ekiti episode and was determined to safeguard its democratic credentials ahead of 2027.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Akinoso acknowledged that the Ekiti situation arose from the party’s inability to submit its candidate within the time prescribed by law, describing the outcome as avoidable and damaging.
He maintained that, as a party with a long-standing tradition of internal democracy, such lapses must not be allowed to recur.
According to him, the Oyo PDP leadership is already putting robust structures in place to ensure seamless processes, legal compliance and party cohesion in the build-up to the next general elections.
“The Oyo State PDP Caretaker Committee assures all members that deliberate and painstaking efforts are ongoing to ensure that our candidates in 2027 are properly nominated and legally recognised,” Akinoso said.
The statement reflects a broader attempt by the party in Oyo to project stability and foresight, amid growing scepticism among stakeholders over the capacity of political parties to manage internal affairs without jeopardising their electoral fortunes.
