A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Monday adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident linked to heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode, 46, is facing prosecution over a crash that reportedly claimed the lives of two of his friends. He was arraigned before the court on January 2, with Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun presiding.
The defendant is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and negligent driving. The charges include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State. Others are reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1) of the same Act; driving without due care and attention, allegedly resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1); and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Act.
At the resumed hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that while the prosecution had lined up four witnesses, only three were present in court. He consequently applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution duplicate the case file and forward it to the Office of the Attorney-General of the State, through the Department of Public Prosecution, for legal advice.
The application was opposed by defence counsel, Mr Abiodun Olalekan, who told the court that the defence was prepared to proceed with the hearing without delay, arguing that justice would be better served by expeditious trial.
In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun held that the request for adjournment was in the overall interest of justice. She granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.
The case has continued to attract public attention due to the involvement of a vehicle associated with the globally renowned boxing champion, even as the court insists on due process and orderly prosecution in line with the law.
