Oriyomi Hamzat Dumps Neutrality, Joins Accord Party, Declares 2027 Governorship Ambition

Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat

Popular Oyo State-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has explained that his decision to declare interest in the 2027 governorship election was borne out of deep personal conviction and what he described as divine approval, rather than political ambition or material advantage.

Hamzat, who is seeking the governorship ticket of the Accord Party, said he arrived at the decision after weighing divergent advice from close associates, many of whom cautioned him against venturing into partisan politics.

Speaking on his programme on Agidigbo FM on Monday, the broadcaster said he subjected all counsel—both supportive and cautionary—to prayer, stressing that he could not ignore what he believed was God’s directive to serve the people of Oyo State.

He acknowledged the concerns of advisers who warned him against contesting, describing their stance as an expression of love and goodwill, but maintained that conscience compelled him to proceed.

Hamzat appealed to those displeased with his decision to forgive him and extend their support, noting that his intention was to serve the people and offer a departure from what he termed the entrenched culture of corruption in politics.

The broadcaster dismissed claims that his ambition was fuelled by financial strength, political influence or government backing, insisting that his declaration was driven by faith and popular goodwill.

He also brushed aside fears of electoral defeat or manipulation, saying he had moved beyond such concerns and was focused on building broad-based support ahead of the 2027 polls.

Hamzat formally declared his interest on Saturday at a rally held at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, where he announced his decision to join the Accord Party and contest the governorship election.

At the event, he said his entry into the race followed what he described as a divine calling, adding that he had never previously planned to seek elective office.
