The Labour Party (LP) has formally declared Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, as its National Leader, in a decisive move aimed at consolidating the party’s internal cohesion and redefining its strategic pathway ahead of future electoral contests.
The resolution was reached during a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday and conveyed in a communiqué signed by the National Secretary, Mr Darlington Nwokocha.
Party insiders said the meeting focused on strengthening stability, driving growth and repositioning the LP within Nigeria’s fast-evolving political space. At the end of deliberations, the NWC unanimously endorsed Otti, describing his leadership as pivotal to the party’s next phase.
“The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirms its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party,” the communiqué read in part.
In a related development, the party extended its goodwill to its former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, following his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The LP leadership wished Obi success in his future political endeavours, signalling a conciliatory and forward-looking posture.
The party also announced the recognition of former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman, stressing that the decision aligns with the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which held that the tenure of the former chairman, Mr Julius Abure, had expired.
Reaffirming its respect for the rule of law, the LP urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accord Senator Usman and Mr Nwokocha full rights and privileges as provided by the court ruling.
The NWC further resolved that all party congresses and the National Convention would proceed strictly in line with the party’s constitution, urging members at all levels to actively participate in the processes.
Thanking members and the Nigerian public for their continued support, the Labour Party reiterated that it remains united and unwavering in its commitment to building a Nigeria anchored on equal opportunity, social justice and good governance.
