Pope Leo XIV has urged global actors to place the welfare of Venezuelans above all other interests following the dramatic removal of President Nicolas Maduro in a United States-led operation.
Speaking on Sunday after the Angelus prayer at St Peter’s Square, the pontiff said the unfolding situation in Venezuela must not lose sight of the ordinary citizens already battered by years of economic hardship and political instability.
“The welfare of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over all other considerations,” the Pope declared, calling for calm, restraint and a decisive shift away from violence.
He stressed that the transition period should be anchored on justice, peace and respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty, warning that external and internal actions must align with international norms and the country’s constitutional framework.
According to him, lasting stability can only be achieved through strict adherence to the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human and civil rights. He underscored the need for institutions to function transparently and inclusively in order to rebuild public trust.
Pope Leo further appealed to Venezuelans to work collectively towards a peaceful and collaborative future, built on dialogue, stability and national harmony. He said particular attention must be paid to the poorest citizens, who continue to bear the brunt of the country’s prolonged economic crisis.
