The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man, Amadin Williams, over the alleged murder of his childhood friend, Eghosa Osas, in Oben community, Edo State.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrest to journalists on Sunday, saying the suspect was apprehended in Benin City after he fled the scene of the attack.
According to police sources, the deceased had recently returned from abroad with his family to celebrate the Christmas festivities. He was said to be attending a housewarming party in Oben community when the incident occurred.
Ikoedem explained that the case was reported by the victim’s elder brother, adding that preliminary investigations revealed that Osas was attacked while he stepped aside to ease himself.
“While he was away, the suspect, believed to be his childhood friend, allegedly cornered him and inflicted a machete cut on his neck, which led to his death,” she said.
The police spokesperson noted that Williams fled after the attack but was later tracked and arrested by operatives of the command.
She added, “The report of the murder of Eghosa Osas is true. The suspect, Amadin Williams, has been arrested. Investigation is ongoing, and he will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
The incident has heightened concerns over violent crimes in the state, coming months after a similar case in June when police arrested a 31-year-old man, Joshua Osaigbovo, in connection with the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend, Osato Festus Edogiaweria, who was reported missing in April 2025.
