Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Governor of Enugu State on Friday said that the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will reduce tension and insecurity in the South-East region.
The former governor who spoke in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today said if the Federal Government can expedite the judgment by the Court of Appeal, the people of the South East will be happy, hence bringing about relative peace in the region.
Daily Independent had on Thursday reported that the Court of Appeal in Abuja discharged the leader of the pro-Biafran group of allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony.
Speaking on the programme, Nwodo said, “I can tell you that not just myself but the leadership and the people of South East are pretty happy with the judgment in the Court of Appeal about Kanu’s case. I have been following this case since extradition.
“The position of the leadership in the South East has always been that this matter will land itself better through a political solution than a legal solution, but Federal Government in its wisdom has continued to follow this case.
“International organizations including the United Nations had intervened and asked the federal government to release him. If the federal government can expedite the judgment by the Court of Appeal, the people of the South East will be happy; it will reduce tension and insecurity in our zone.
“Therefore, we will continue to advise the federal government that anything yet to be done to resolve the matter politically rather than through legal action.”
