Fresh political ripples emerged on Thursday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) delivered a sharp admonition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to prioritise national security or step aside from office.
The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, raised the alarm over reports alleging that fleets of Hilux trucks, Land Cruisers and Hummer buses were quietly distributed to political allies nationwide to activate the President’s 2027 re-election machinery.
Abdullahi, in a strongly worded statement, said such action, coming at a time the country remains under a state of emergency due to spiralling insecurity, underscores what he described as the administration’s misaligned priorities.
He decried the situation in which Nigerians continue to face daily threats while the Presidency allegedly channels attention towards early political mobilisation.
According to him, communities across the country remain under siege, with citizens kidnapped, displaced and in some cases killed, while security operatives battle overstretched capacities in multiple hotspots.
He argued that in an era marked by uncertainty, extraordinary leadership behaviour should be the norm, not the exception. Abdullahi accused the administration of offering symbolism in place of tangible interventions, with no discernible improvement in security presence or strategic reinforcement since the emergency declaration.
He warned that sustained political preoccupation at a time of national distress risks deepening public disillusionment and weakening confidence in the government’s resolve.
Abdullahi insisted that leadership in moments of crisis demands clear priorities, disciplined governance and a firm moral compass — attributes he said the nation expects the President to demonstrate without ambiguity.
He maintained that Nigeria’s recovery hinges on urgent, focused action rather than what he termed lavish convoys and premature campaign structures.
The ADC, therefore, challenged President Tinubu to recommit fully to the business of governance or step aside if political ambition has now overtaken the urgent need to restore order and reassure a shaken nation.
