Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has rubbished a viral social media post claiming that detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had “converted” two wardens at the Sokoto Custodial Centre into embracing anti-Nigeria sentiments.
The rumour, pushed aggressively across Facebook, alleged that the unnamed wardens—said to have been influenced by Kanu—resigned from service after purportedly adopting his ideology. The claim, though lacking any proof, gained momentum among some supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Ahmad, clearly unimpressed, said the narrative exemplifies the worsening spread of reckless misinformation in Nigeria’s online political space.
“I just read one of the dumbest posts on Facebook,” he wrote. “A claim that Nnamdi Kanu has ‘converted’ two prison wardens in Sokoto Prison to join him in hating Nigeria and that the wardens even resigned. You know what? His people believe it and have been circulating the post without a shred of logic or evidence.”
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. His transfer to the north-western facility was ordered as part of the court’s sentencing directives.
