The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) has named renowned obstetrician and administrator, Professor Abdulwaheed Olajide Olatinwo, as the recipient of its 2025 Award for Excellence in Administration.
This is in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare management and the advancement of obstetrics and gynaecology in Nigeria.
The notification letter dated November 17, 2025, conveyed the Society’s commendation for Prof. Olatinwo’s “excellent representation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in health care administration.”
The award was presented during the opening ceremony of the 59th SOGON Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference held today, Thursday, November 27, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
SOGON described the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate his achievements alongside fellow awardees and stakeholders in the health sector.
Born on March 30, 1964, in Offa, Kwara State, Prof. Olatinwo has built an illustrious career spanning more than three decades.
He began his early education at Adeola Model School, Offa, before proceeding to Offa Grammar School, where he graduated with distinction.
He later obtained his MBBS degree from the University of Maiduguri in 1985.
He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (1989–1995), earning the prestigious Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS).
A scholar with vast academic depth, Prof. Olatinwo also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Computing, an MBA in Health Management and Healthcare Financing, and has undertaken advanced leadership training at the INSEAD Business School in France.
He rose to the rank of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2011.
Prof. Olatinwo has served the University of Ilorin and the medical community in various capacities.
He was appointed Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist and Lecturer I in 1996, later serving as Acting Head of Department, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and Chief Medical Director of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (2010–2018).
His tenure as CMD saw the establishment of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre and a modern delivery suite complex, among other innovations.
Beyond clinical practice, he has contributed to healthcare governance and policy development, serving on the boards of the Islamic Foundation for Medical Aids, the Council of the West African College of Surgeons, and the Society for Quality Healthcare in Nigeria.
He is also the National Education Secretary of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria and sits on the Council of Summit University, Offa.
A prolific researcher and widely published scholar, Prof. Olatinwo’s expertise spans reproductive health, gynaecological endocrinology, fetomaternal medicine, and healthcare financing.
Reacting to the award, the respected professor expressed profound gratitude to SOGON, describing the recognition as both humbling and inspiring.
He emphasized that the honour reflected the collective efforts of colleagues and stakeholders who have supported his professional journey.
“I accept this award with immense gratitude and humility, recognizing that it is not just a personal accolade but a reflection of the collective efforts and dedication of our esteemed society,” he said.
He pledged to continue contributing to the advancement of women’s health and the development of obstetrics and gynaecology in Nigeria.
Prof. Olatinwo, who is married and blessed with children, reaffirmed his commitment to excellence in healthcare administration, noting that the honour from SOGON would further strengthen his resolve to support the society’s goals and national health development.
The 59th SOGON AGM and Scientific Conference attracted leading medical practitioners, researchers, and policymakers from across the country.
Prof. Olatinwo’s recognition was one of the high points of the event.
