Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, are now in police custody after allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old female undergraduate within the university community.
The incident, confirmed on Monday by the Ondo State Police Command, reportedly occurred after the victim visited her childhood friend, identified as 19-year-old Queen Sodo, at her residence on campus. According to investigators, the victim’s drink was allegedly laced with a substance that caused her to lose consciousness shortly after arrival.
Realising the victim was incapacitated, Queen allegedly invited her male accomplice, 23-year-old Tom Samuel, a 300-level student, who then proceeded to assault the unconscious victim. Police said the act was committed with Queen present in the room.
Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the victim was rescued when a concerned neighbour, disturbed by unusual noises, alerted authorities. Officers arrived at the scene to find the victim naked, unconscious and in a vulnerable state.
He disclosed that both suspects were arrested immediately and have since confessed to their roles in the crime. Exhibits recovered from the room included the bottle of the drug-laced drink, which has been sent for toxicology analysis to aid prosecution.
“Preliminary investigation shows that the victim trusted the long-standing friendship that began in secondary school. She accepted a drink from Queen, unaware it had been laced. Upon observing that the victim had become incapacitated, Queen summoned her male co-conspirator and stood guard while the assault took place,” Ayanlade stated.
The victim was taken to a specialist hospital for treatment and is currently recovering.
The police spokesperson added that the suspects remain in custody and will be transferred to the Gender Desk Office in Akure for further investigation before being charged to court.
