The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed the abduction of pupils, students and teachers following a late-night assault on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri, in Niger State.
The attack, which unfolded between 1am and 3am on Friday, threw the quiet community into turmoil as armed men stormed the school premises, whisking away learners, educators and a security guard who was reportedly shot during the invasion.
In an official statement signed by the Diocesan Secretary, Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Church described the incident as distressing and “deeply troubling”, noting that the safety of the abducted children remains its foremost concern.
According to the Diocese, security operatives were immediately alerted and have since commenced coordinated search-and-rescue operations aimed at securing the victims’ safe return.
The Bishop of the Diocese was said to be in active communication with security agencies, traditional institutions and government authorities to ensure that all possible channels are utilised in the rescue effort.
The Church, while condemning the attack in strong terms, urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing operations. It also called for sustained prayers for the swift release of those taken and for comfort for their families, who have been thrown into anguish.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding children under its care, the Diocese promised to issue further updates as verified information emerges.
“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,” the statement added.
