WAEC Denies Imposing Subject Choices For 2026 WASSCE

— Council urges students, schools to ignore misleading reports

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed as false the circulating reports suggesting that it directed secondary school students to compulsorily select specific subjects for the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at the Council, Moyosola Adeshina, described the claims as “baseless and misleading”, urging the public to disregard such information.

“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated.

According to her, WAEC does not formulate or modify the national curriculum, stressing that the responsibility lies solely with the Federal Government through relevant educational authorities.

She clarified that the Council’s mandate is confined to implementing government-approved curricula through credible assessment processes, in line with its legal and operational frameworks.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” she added.

The examination body reiterated its commitment to maintaining professionalism, transparency, and fairness in all its examinations. It assured candidates preparing for the 2026 WASSCE of an equal and unbiased assessment environment.

WAEC further advised schools, parents, and stakeholders to rely only on verified information from its official communication channels, warning against the spread of fake news that could cause unnecessary anxiety among candidates.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement concluded.

The Council reaffirmed that preparations for the 2026 WASSCE are ongoing and that all guidelines will be duly communicated through proper official platforms in due course.
