Lagos Govt Rescues Mentally Ill Woman Accused Of Harassing Residents In Agege

The Lagos State Government has intervened in the case of a mentally ill woman accused of disturbing residents in Agege, following a series of complaints and a viral video that drew public attention.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, disclosed the intervention in a statement issued on Friday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to the commissioner, operatives from the ministry’s Rescue Team moved swiftly to the scene after receiving distress calls from residents, leading to the successful evacuation of the woman for medical examination and rehabilitation.

The move came after a viral video surfaced online, showing a distressed resident pleading for help over the woman’s alleged violent behaviour. The resident claimed the woman, who reportedly lived at No. 31 Adedosu Street, Agege, had been throwing stones into homes and wielding sharp objects such as a machete and knife to threaten neighbours.

The incident triggered a wave of concern among Lagosians, many of whom urged the government to act promptly to safeguard the community while ensuring the woman received adequate medical care.

Confirming the rescue, Commissioner Ogunlende said the woman had been taken to one of the state’s approved care facilities.

“She has been taken to one of our centres for proper care and rehabilitation. I encourage members of the public to continue to report similar cases requiring government intervention,” Ogunlende stated.

He reiterated that the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring public safety across the state.

The Ministry of Youth and Social Development further appealed to residents to make use of its official helplines to report incidents involving mentally challenged persons or other social emergencies for swift response.
