A security expert, Salihu Dantata, has backed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to reshuffle the nation’s Service Chiefs, insisting that the President acted within his constitutional authority.
Speaking on Arise Television on Friday, Dantata said the move, though unexpected, was well within the powers of the Commander-in-Chief.
He noted that the President’s decision reflected global best practices, where leaders reserve the right to appoint or dismiss military chiefs in pursuit of national security objectives.
“In the first place, no one expected it; it came as a surprise,” Dantata said. “But beyond that, President Tinubu, as the Commander-in-Chief, has the constitutional right to relieve any Service Chiefs of their duties. Across the world, this is the standard practice — when appointed officers are not achieving expected results, the leader has the discretion to make changes.”
President Tinubu had on Friday announced changes in the military hierarchy as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and enhance operational efficiency across the armed forces.
Dantata described the reshuffle as a necessary step to reinvigorate the nation’s defence strategy, especially amid persistent security challenges confronting the country.
