11 Ebonyi Councillors Move To Impeach Onicha LG Chairman Over Power Abuse, Mismanagement

Eleven out of the twelve councillors in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have signed to impeach the council chairman, Hon. Ogbofia Ikechukwu, over alleged abuse of office, mismanagement of funds, and political intolerance.

The lawmakers accused the chairman of sidelining them in governance despite a N100 million budgetary provision that has failed to reflect in the renovation of the legislative complex or community development projects.

In a petition sent to Governor Francis Nwifuru and other key political leaders, the councillors alleged that Ikechukwu diverted government resources and concentrated projects in his ward, Abaomege, at the expense of others.

They said, “It is regrettable that the chairman handed ward mobilisation duties to his aides, rendering us powerless. He ignores our calls and excludes us from official meetings and events. Even the governor’s directive on Christmas rice distribution was violated, with our wards receiving less than half of what was approved.”

The councillors also claimed they were owed five months of stipends and lamented the neglect of their housing and legislative bus projects captured in the 2025 budget.

“Abaomege ward gets all the attention while others are abandoned. We have lost relevance in our communities because of the chairman’s leadership style,” they added.
