The Nigeria Police Force, Ilesa Command, Osun State, has arrested a member of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, over alleged involvement in cult-related activities.
A video of the arrest, which has since gone viral on social media, showed the suspect identified as Amure Sunday, popularly known as Irawo, confessing to being a member of the Aiye Supreme Cult Confraternity.
During police interrogation, the 30-year-old suspect, a native of Ilesa from the Apate compound, admitted that he was initiated into the confraternity in 2018 by one Seun, who is said to be residing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Amure further revealed that he had previously been arrested and charged to court for breaching public peace, an offence for which he spent three months at the Ilesa Correctional Centre.
He also told investigators that he joined the Amotekun Corps after his father, Mr. Amure Oluwadamilare, gave him the recruitment form, claiming that he had turned a new leaf before enlisting in the security outfit.
The suspect said, “I joined Amotekun after I repented. My father gave me the form. Before then, I was a member of the Aiye confraternity, and I was initiated in 2018 by Seun from Port Harcourt.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Amotekun Corps in Osun State has not issued any official statement regarding the arrest.
