The Deputy Senate Leader and Senator representing Kwara South, Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, has debunked claims suggesting he made disparaging remarks against the Igbomina people.
He said such insinuations as false, mischievous, and politically motivated.
In a statement signed by his Legislative Aide on Media and Community Relations, Olaitan Adeyanju, Senator Ashiru said his attention was drawn to a viral video deliberately misrepresenting his comments at the Offa Strategic Retreat, an event aimed at encouraging grassroots political engagement.
According to the statement, the remarks in question were “specifically tailored to inspire the people of Offa to become more politically active and involved in governance,” and not in any way targeted at the Igbomina or any other group in Kwara South.
The Senator emphasized his long-standing commitment to unity, inclusivity, and equitable development across all ethnic blocs within Kwara South — including the Igbomina, Ibolo, and Ekiti communities.
“Senator Ashiru has consistently championed fairness and collective progress for all. His numerous projects and interventions in Igbomina towns and across the district speak volumes of his dedication to balanced representation,” the statement read in part.
The lawmaker further clarified that while he proudly acknowledges his ancestral roots in Ajase-Ipo, an Igbomina town, such lineage has never influenced his impartial approach to governance and development.
He maintained that divisive narratives being circulated were the handiwork of political opportunists seeking to sow discord within the district ahead of future elections.
“Senator Ashiru remains deeply committed to fostering unity and collaboration among all groups — indigenes and non-indigenes alike — as he believes sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and solidarity,” Adeyanju stated.
The statement urged the public to disregard the misleading video and to continue supporting Senator Ashiru’s efforts toward the growth and well-being of every constituent in Kwara South.
