The Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State Council, Comrade (Dr.) Christopher Abimbola Arapasopo (mpi), has saluted the courage, resilience, and dedication of teachers in Nigeria as the world celebrates World Teachers’ Day 2025, themed “Together for Teachers, Together for Tomorrow.”
Speaking at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, Dr. Arapasopo described teachers as “the backbone of society” who ignite the flame of knowledge, inspire dreams, and nurture the potentials of young minds.
“Teachers are the frontlines, guiding our children, nurturing their talents, and preparing them to face the challenges of tomorrow. Despite the difficulties you face, your commitment remains unwavering, and for this, we are deeply grateful,” he stated.
The NLC chairperson emphasized that the teaching profession is a noble calling that transforms lives and builds a better future, stressing the need for society to celebrate and support teachers beyond the annual observance.
He called on both the federal and state governments to invest adequately in the education sector to address the long-standing challenges facing teachers and the system. According to him, the current budgetary allocation to education remains a far cry from the UNESCO-recommended benchmark of at least 6% of GDP or 20% of the national budget.
“We call on governments to ensure full implementation of all approved incentives to our teachers in order to boost their morale and enhance productivity in the discharge of their professional duties,” he added.
Dr. Arapasopo also commended all affiliated members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun State Chapter, for their resilience and compliance with the union’s directive to withdraw their services following political unrest across local government councils in the state.
He urged members to remain steadfast and resist pressures to resume work, warning against “political shenanigans designed to deceive and divide workers.”
“Ignore the cry from the pit of hell to lure you back into the lions’ den. The council secretariats are not yet safe for resumption of duties,” he cautioned.
Reaffirming the NLC’s commitment to the protection of workers’ rights, Dr. Arapasopo noted that the union remains “a bastion of democratic principles and the voice of the masses,” and will continue to stand firm in defending the welfare of workers across the state.
Also, Labour Movement has issued a stern warning to the management of United Bank for Africa (UBA) to respect the law and avoid a path that leads to unrest. “Should the bank fail to comply with legal and regulatory obligations, the Labour Movement will not hesitate to organise picketing and other lawful industrial actions to defend workers’ rights.
He concluded by appreciating teachers for their invaluable contributions to nation-building, extending his felicitations to them on the occasion of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration.
“To all the teachers around the world, thank you for your dedication. Happy Celebration and Happy World Teachers’ Day,” he said.
The event ended with solidarity chants of “Aluta Continua! Victoria Ascerta!”
