The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Saturday met with members of the Rivers State Elders Council in Port Harcourt in what appears to be a renewed effort to consolidate peace and unity within the state’s political structure.
The meeting, held behind closed doors, was attended by key political figures including the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Martins Amaewhule, and the Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba.
Photographs from the gathering, shared by Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media to the FCT Minister, showed the two leaders engaging in cordial conversation, an indication that political hostilities between them may be softening.
In a post on his official X handle on Sunday, Olayinka described the meeting as a sign of reconciliation, noting that the “Rivers political family is fully united.”
While details of the discussions were not disclosed, the parley is seen by political observers as a significant step towards stabilising governance in Rivers State after months of tension that had threatened to divide the ruling political establishment.
Governor Fubara was reinstated on Sept. 18, 2025, following the lifting of a six-month state of emergency imposed on the state by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, due to political unrest.
The meeting, sources said, was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the state and federal governments and restoring confidence among party loyalists.
