The Obidient Movement has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Adekunle Mustapha, popularly known as Sego, over a viral video in which he allegedly threatened to kill anyone who votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The movement urged President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to take swift action, warning that Sego’s statement represents a serious threat to democracy and public peace.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Tanko Yunusa, the group described the alleged threat as part of “a growing culture of political intolerance and intimidation in Lagos State.”
“The attention of the Obidient Movement has been drawn to comments, clearly captured on video, made by the Lagos NURTW Chairman, Adekunle Mustapha, also known as Sego,” the statement read. “In summary, the said Sego, who masquerades as a union leader, threatened to kill anyone who votes against the APC during the next elections in 2027.”
Yunusa recalled the violence that marred the 2023 general elections in Lagos, accusing members of the NURTW and other political thugs of unleashing attacks on voters believed to support the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
“The Obidient Movement recalls with grief and deep concern the wave of political violence that engulfed Lagos during the 2023 polls. Many of our members and supporters were assaulted, maimed, and, in some cases, killed by armed thugs aligned with the APC,” the statement alleged.
According to Yunusa, Sego’s utterances reflect what he described as the APC’s desperation, claiming the ruling party lacks the grassroots support to win a free and fair election in the state.
“These threats and acts of violence are not isolated incidents; they are desperate measures by a political party that has failed to deliver good governance and fears rejection at the polls,” Yunusa said.
The movement further accused the Lagos NURTW of being a long-standing tool for political intimidation and extortion. “Over the years, murder, thuggery, and political violence have become associated with the operations of the NURTW in Lagos. It is an open secret that these acts have been tolerated, and at times encouraged, by those in power,” the statement continued.
Calling for accountability, Yunusa insisted that both President Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu bear “moral and statutory responsibility” to rein in violent elements within the state’s political structure.
“We are calling on President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and all security agencies — including the Police, DSS, and Military — to immediately arrest and prosecute Sego and others involved in these acts of political terrorism,” Yunusa declared.
The Obidient Movement also appealed to the international community to take note of what it termed “systematic threats to democracy and human rights in Nigeria.”
“We are putting the international community on alert regarding these crimes against humanity and threats to peace. Those responsible must not go unpunished,” Yunusa added.
