The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has announced the commencement of a nationwide strike, directing its members across offices, oilfields and institutions to withdraw their services from Monday, September 29.
The union’s decision followed a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, where it resolved to halt all operations in protest against what it described as the “excesses” of the Dangote Refinery and disregard for Nigerian laws.
In a statement issued after the meeting, PENGASSAN ordered its members to down tools from 12:01 a.m. on Monday. It further instructed those stationed at control rooms, panel operations and field locations to begin a complete shutdown starting 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, while observing a prayer vigil.
According to the association, the prayer session is a spiritual call for divine intervention, seeking that “those in authority have the courage to rein in Dangote and his co-travellers on the need to obey the laws of Nigeria.”
“All PENGASSAN members across all offices, companies, institutions and agencies should withdraw their services effective 00:01 on Monday, September 29. All IOC branches must ramp down gas production and supply to Dangote Refinery and petrochemicals,” the union declared.
The association also warned that during the strike period, no intervention would be entertained in field operations except where personnel safety or asset protection is at risk. Even in such instances, it insisted, clearance must be obtained from the National Secretariat.
PENGASSAN restated its resolve, saying no individual or organisation was bigger than Nigeria. “An injury to one is an injury to all,” it stressed.
