The United States President, Donald Trump, has made a surprising reversal in his position on the Russia-Ukraine war, declaring that Kyiv could recover all territories lost to Moscow.
Trump, who met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, expressed optimism that Ukraine could regain its pre-war borders with sustained European and NATO support.
In a post shared shortly after the meeting, the ex-president wrote: “I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form. With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original borders from where this war started is very much an option.”
The remarks stand in stark contrast to Trump’s earlier stance, in which he suggested that Ukraine might have to cede parts of its territory to Russia in order to end the conflict. That position had unsettled European allies and Kyiv, raising concerns about Western unity on the matter.
Zelenskyy, who has consistently urged the West to keep up pressure on Moscow, welcomed Trump’s renewed commitment. “Trump is a game changer by himself,” the Ukrainian leader said, describing the shift as a morale boost for his war-weary nation.
