The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State has renewed its call for stronger synergy with journalists as part of efforts to deepen voter education and strengthen democratic participation across the state.
The Commission’s new Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Alhaji Nuhu Ibrahim, made the appeal on Tuesday during a familiarisation visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe State Council Secretariat in Damaturu.
According to him, the collaboration between INEC and the media is not just desirable but indispensable, especially at a time when the Commission is intensifying its continuous voter registration exercise and other electoral activities in the state.
“With your cooperation, we can work efficiently to enlighten the public on our activities,” Ibrahim assured, pledging openness and prompt dissemination of information to ensure that citizens are adequately informed and mobilised ahead of future elections.
In his response, the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Rajab Mohammad Ismail, pledged the union’s unwavering support for INEC, describing the media as a critical ally in sustaining Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He, however, urged the Commission to provide timely notice of events and programmes to enable journalists, particularly those outside the state capital, to participate fully and ensure adequate coverage.
