Amnesty International’s Report On Nigeria Fake, Mischievous, Says NDMG

The Northwest Democracy Monitoring Group (NDMG) has dismissed Amnesty International’s latest report on Nigeria as “fake, mischievous and grossly misleading,” warning that such publications risk fuelling tension and undermining democratic stability in the country.

In a strongly worded statement issued by its Chairman, Abubakar Sani, the group accused Amnesty of inflating figures and presenting unsubstantiated claims that, if left unchecked, could incite division among Nigerians.

“We categorically challenge the numbers cited in this report, deeming them grossly inflated, misleading, and ultimately inflammatory,” Sani declared. “Our findings, drawn from direct engagement with communities across the Northwest, stand in stark contrast to the exaggerated statistics Amnesty has circulated. Rather than inform, the report seems designed to incite unrest and division.”

The NDMG noted that while Nigeria faces undeniable socio-political challenges, oversimplifying such issues through what it called “sensationalised data” does little to support the nation’s search for peace. Instead, the group said, Amnesty’s reporting style undermines the country’s sovereignty and long-standing efforts at democratic consolidation.

According to the group, the timing of Amnesty’s report is also suspect. “At a time when Nigeria is working diligently to address its challenges through dialogue and democratic processes, the dissemination of misleading information only serves to weaken these efforts,” Sani said.

The NDMG urged Amnesty International to collaborate with local organisations and stakeholders for more accurate reporting, stressing that Nigeria does not require “external interference that exacerbates tensions,” but support that respects the nation’s sovereignty.

“Our democracy is not perfect, but it is ours to nurture,” the group insisted. “We implore Amnesty International to reflect on the potential consequences of its actions and reconsider the impact of its reporting on the ground.”

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the NDMG pledged to continue monitoring developments in Nigeria and advocating for credible information that strengthens democratic values rather than erodes them.
