Ibadan APC Chieftain Defects To PDP, Cites Imposition, Neglect

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Aare Abeeb Idowu Balogun, has resigned his membership of the ruling party, citing alleged imposition of candidates and disregard for loyal members.

Balogun, who until Tuesday was the Chairman of APC Ward 12 in Ibadan South West Local Government, formally tendered his resignation in a letter dated 26th August, 2025, and announced his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the letter addressed to the APC ward leadership, Balogun expressed deep frustration with what he described as the party’s culture of sidelining committed members in favour of “highest-paying candidates” and handpicked aspirants.

According to him, the APC has failed to reward loyalty and sacrifice, leaving grassroots members feeling alienated.

“I find it worrisome remaining in a party that believes so much in imposition, where the faithful members have no say,” Balogun wrote. “Despite our sacrifices and sweat, the leadership continues to promote self-handpicking and neglects the committed ones.”

The former ward chairman said his decision to cross over to the PDP was informed by a desire for a political environment that prioritises inclusivity and recognises merit.

“For my personal development and for the good of our state, I believe I will find succour and true dividends of democracy in the new party I am joining,” he declared.

Balogun’s defection is seen by observers as a fresh blow to the APC’s grassroots strength in Ibadan South West, especially as Oyo politics gathers momentum ahead of the next election cycle.

The PDP in the state is expected to formally welcome him and his supporters in the coming days.
