The Lagos State Government has declared Wednesday, 20 August 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued on Monday, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding indigenous traditions while fostering cultural harmony in the state.
Isese Day, which honours Yoruba traditional religion and heritage, has become a major cultural observance across Nigeria, particularly in the South-West. In Lagos, the holiday has evolved into an annual tradition, providing an opportunity for citizens to participate in rituals, festivals, and communal gatherings that pay tribute to ancestral legacies and Yoruba deities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the observance as a reminder of the need to preserve culture in an increasingly modern society.
“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians. This work-free day provides an opportunity for our people to connect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and strengthen unity in our diverse state,” the governor said.
The declaration has received commendation from traditional rulers and cultural advocates, including the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, who hailed the gesture as a boost to Yoruba spirituality and identity.
Expected activities during the celebration include visits to sacred sites, cultural performances, communal prayers, and festivals. The state government also urged residents to celebrate peacefully while promoting mutual respect across religious and cultural lines.
By formally observing Isese Day, Lagos joins Oyo and Osun States in recognising the festival, further cementing its place as a hub of Yoruba culture and heritage.
