The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State has concluded preparations for the forthcoming by-election to fill the vacant Munya Constituency seat in the Niger State House of Assembly.
The election comes nearly a year after the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency, Mr. Joseph Haruna Sduza, who succumbed to a brief illness in September last year. Until his demise, the retired Air Force officer served as Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Security and Intelligence.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Ahmed Yushau Garki, disclosed at a stakeholders’ meeting in Minna that political parties had submitted the names of their nominated candidates following primary elections conducted between 17 and 21 July.
According to Garki, Munya Constituency has 11 registration areas, 119 polling units, and 62,459 registered voters. He also announced that political campaigns would run from 2 to 14 August, while the by-election is scheduled for 16 August.
The INEC chief urged political parties to adhere strictly to the timetable and ensure peaceful campaigns, assuring stakeholders that the exercise would be free, fair, and credible.
Meanwhile, a document sighted at the commission’s Minna office indicates that a two-level Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise—online and in-person—will commence nationwide next month. Online registration begins on 18 September, while in-person registration at state INEC offices starts on 25 September.
