President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, by one year.
The Presidency announced the extension in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The current tenure of Adeniyi, which was due to expire on 31 August 2025, will now run for an additional year.
According to the statement, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms within the service and oversee key initiatives of the Tinubu administration. These include:
The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
Full implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
The Presidency commended Adeniyi for his “steadfast leadership and commitment to service”, noting that the additional year will strengthen the Customs Service in its core mandates of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security.
