The Kwara State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has cautioned hospitals across the state against deploying student nurses on clinical postings or intern nurses to fill the gap created by the ongoing seven-day warning strike declared by the association’s national leadership.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday, the State Secretary of NANNM, Marcus Lucas, said the union had received reports that some health facilities were considering using students and interns to perform the duties of registered nurses during the industrial action.
He warned that such practices not only endanger patient safety but also amount to undermining the association’s collective struggle.
“Under no circumstances should any student nurse or intern be allowed to take over the responsibilities of registered nurses during this period,” the statement read.
The union stressed that any Head of Department (HOD) found encouraging such actions would be held accountable and face serious consequences.
NANNM further urged its members to remain steadfast and united until their demands are addressed.
