In a strategic move signalling renewed political engagement, former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has formally rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing its enduring national structure and potential to reposition Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Olawepo-Hashim made this declaration on Wednesday during a high-level interaction with the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja.
In his remarks, he asserted that despite internal rifts and recent defections, the PDP remains Nigeria’s only genuinely national political institution, with a foundational vision anchored on inclusivity and widespread grassroots presence.
“Since 1998, the PDP has maintained a footprint in nearly every polling unit across the federation. That legacy endures. It is this national breadth that gives the PDP its unique strength and credibility as a viable alternative to the ruling APC,” Olawepo-Hashim stated.
He dismissed apprehensions over the party’s declining influence, arguing that while prominent defections may make headlines, the PDP’s real strength lies in its broad-based popular support. “The heart of any political movement is its people—not a handful of powerful actors. The people are still firmly with the PDP,” he emphasised.
Commending Ambassador Umar Damagum, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Olawepo-Hashim praised his steady leadership and diplomatic handling of party affairs during challenging periods. He described Damagum’s stewardship as critical in maintaining party cohesion.
Looking ahead to 2027, the former presidential hopeful urged the PDP to rally around a candidate with vision, competence, and a firm commitment to national unity, economic reform, and social equity.
“Nigerians are yearning for a new leadership paradigm. The PDP must rise to that expectation by presenting a candidate capable of delivering on national security, economic revival, and justice. With discipline, unity, and purpose, the PDP can once again emerge as a credible force—not just to win elections, but to rebuild the nation,” he concluded.
