Two Senators representing Akwa Ibom State have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors are Senator Sampson Ekong, representing Akwa Ibom South, and Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East. Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the Senate by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during Wednesday’s plenary session.
News Bulletin reports that the defections are part of a growing wave of high-profile exits from the PDP to the ruling APC. While some political figures have opted for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), others have gravitated towards the APC, citing structural issues within the PDP.
In their respective letters, both Senators attributed their decision to the persistent leadership crisis bedevilling the PDP at both state and national levels.
