The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a resident of Durumi 2, Abuja, in connection with the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in an uncovered septic tank on Tuesday night.
The suspect, identified as Philip Jallo, was apprehended by officers from the Durumi Divisional Headquarters following the incident, which occurred around 9:00 p.m. on 16 July 2025.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the child had been playing within the compound when he slipped and fell into the open septic tank filled with human waste. Although he was swiftly rescued, the boy was later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The Police stated that the septic tank had long been a known hazard in the community, with several residents reportedly warning Jallo about its dangerous state. Despite repeated appeals, he allegedly failed to secure the tank.
“The exposed soakaway remained a clear and present danger, in spite of persistent warnings from concerned neighbours. The suspect’s negligence has now resulted in a tragic and entirely preventable death,” the Police said in a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He stressed the critical importance of environmental safety and community responsibility.
“This unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder of how negligence can have fatal consequences. We call on all residents to take proactive measures to secure their surroundings and urge parents and guardians to exercise vigilance over their children,” the Commissioner stated.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
The FCT Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to securing justice for the victim and ensuring that individuals whose negligence endangers public safety, especially the lives of children, are held accountable.
