A 35-year-old housewife, Sarah Gideon, was on Thursday arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Kaduna over the alleged theft of a goat in the Narayi area of the state.
The defendant, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft, is accused of attempting to steal a goat belonging to one Martins Bobai from his residence in the Karji community on Tuesday.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Sunday Luka, Gideon was reportedly working on a nearby farm when she allegedly untied the goat tethered in front of the complainant’s house and attempted to flee with it.
“She was seen by a neighbour who noticed her dragging the goat away. The alarm raised led to her immediate apprehension,” Luka told the court.
The prosecutor added that the defendant failed to provide a credible explanation when interrogated by officers at the Barnawa Police Division.
The alleged offence contravenes Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦100,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until 14 August for further hearing.
