On Wednesday, the Senate approved Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s candidacy to the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Following the Committee of the Whole’s examination of Justice Ariwoola inside the Senate chambers, the nomination was confirmed.
Justice Ariwoola answered questions from Senators throughout the screening.
Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters Opeyemi Bamidele, Minority Leader of the Senate Philip Aduda, Senator Gabriel Suswam, and Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah were among the senators who posed questions.
At exactly 12:45 during the exercise, Senators requested that the acting CJN be asked to take a bow and go “having sufficiently responded to questions posed to him.”
In response, Senate President Ahmad Lawan said that even if the request goes against his personal convictions, he would be obligated by the senators’ decision if they wanted the interim CJN to bow.
At around 12:55pm, Lawan put the request to a voice vote, and all senators agreed that the acting CJN could take a bow and leave.
The Senate then reconvened in session, where the senators unanimously agreed to confirm the acting CJN’s nomination for appointment to the position of CJN.
