A newlywed man, Usman Ali, has brought his wife, Maryam, before a Sharia Court sitting in the Jaba area of Kano State, alleging that she stole three mobile phones collectively valued at ₦65,000.
Appearing before the court, Maryam firmly denied the allegations. She disclosed that she fled their matrimonial home in Abuja for Kano to escape persistent physical abuse allegedly inflicted by her husband. According to her testimony, she sought refuge with her parents after enduring repeated beatings.
In a separate petition, Usman accused three women—whom he identified as Maryam’s close friends—of exerting negative influence on his wife and encouraging her to participate in what he described as “improper outings.”
Presiding over the matter, Judge Ustaz Rabiu Yahaya granted Maryam bail and adjourned the case to 15 July for further hearing.
