Nanloong Daniel Elected Plateau Assembly Speaker As Dewan Steps Down
Osun

Nanloong Daniel, representing Mikang Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been elected as the new Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly following the resignation of Gabriel Dewan of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

The leadership change was formalized during an emergency sitting held at the temporary Assembly complex within the Old Government House in Jos.

Daniel, a former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously elected by his fellow lawmakers. His emergence comes amid ongoing political realignments within the state.

Sources close to the Assembly disclosed that the resignation of Dewan followed a closed-door meeting convened by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, which included the outgoing Speaker and other key legislators. The meeting was reportedly aimed at resolving escalating political tensions in the state.

The emergency session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang, who oversaw the smooth transition.

Dewan, the sole YPP representative in the House, is believed to have stepped down as part of broader efforts to stabilise the Assembly’s leadership.

This development follows a recent political shake-up wherein 16 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers were sacked by a ruling of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which invalidated their election over issues concerning the party’s structure ahead of the 2023 polls.
