Court Sentences Man To 3 Years In Prison For Attempted Rape Of Osun Varsity Student

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Raji Ridwan, to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to rape a female student at the Federal University of Science, Ila-Orangun.

The judgement, delivered on Friday, June 20, came after Ridwan was apprehended by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps for unlawfully entering a female hostel and attempting to sexually assault one of the residents.

According to court records, the incident occurred at night when Ridwan allegedly sneaked into the hostel. His attempt was thwarted when the victim resisted and raised the alarm, drawing the attention of other students and neighbours. Ridwan fled the scene but was captured shortly afterward during a coordinated manhunt.

Upon arrest, he confessed to the crime and was arraigned before Magistrate Ibukun Adeniran on a single count of attempted rape. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

The prosecution presented his confessional statement, along with eyewitness testimony from the scene. Magistrate Adeniran held that the act contravened Section 359 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. 2, Laws of Osun State, 2002, and sentenced him accordingly—without the option of a fine.

In reaction, the Osun Amotekun Corps commended the courage of the victim and the swift response of residents, reaffirming its commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence across the state.
