The Lagos State Government has announced an immediate suspension of all planning approvals within the corridor of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, during a media briefing in Alausa.
Dr. Olumide explained that the suspension was necessitated by the need to reassess the potential impact of the coastal highway on the state’s existing and proposed development frameworks. He highlighted that the project had already disrupted the newly completed Ode-Omi Action Area Plan and is likely to affect both the Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan and the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan, which are currently under development.
“Given the implications of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road on our urban development strategies, it is imperative to re-evaluate the situation and ensure alignment with our planning instruments to prevent further distortions,” Olumide stated. “Consequently, we have resolved to suspend planning approvals within the project corridor until further notice.”
The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been directed to enforce the suspension pending further directives.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting a well-structured, inclusive, and sustainable urban environment. He also emphasised that Lagos stands to benefit significantly from the inter-state Coastal Highway, provided that developmental activities are properly harmonized with the broader planning agenda.
