A heightened security presence was observed Thursday morning at the Ikeja Underbridge, Lagos, as scores of protesters began assembling to mark this year’s June 12 Democracy Day.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, including officers from the Area F Command, were strategically deployed to the protest site in anticipation of the planned demonstration. The security buildup comes amid rising public discontent over Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and escalating insecurity under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The protesters, comprising civil society groups, rights advocates, and pro-democracy campaigners, gathered peacefully to voice concerns over the perceived erosion of democratic values and the declining quality of life for ordinary Nigerians.
Although the demonstration had not officially commenced as of press time, security operatives maintained a visible and vigilant presence, positioning patrol vehicles and riot control units across key locations in the area.
Organisers of the protest have called for economic reforms, stronger institutional accountability, and enhanced protections for civil liberties—issues they say align with the spirit and legacy of June 12.
