The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to coordinate the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, was formally inaugurated on Wednesday in Abuja. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, represented the SGF at the inaugural meeting.
Bagudu described the celebration as a moment to honour the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers and democracy advocates who fought for the restoration of civilian rule and the entrenchment of democratic values.
“This year’s Democracy Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our founding fathers in achieving independence and to remember the struggles endured by democratic champions in reclaiming power from military rule,” he said. “Celebrating this day honours their courage and secures their place in our national history.”
He also noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for the government to highlight its accomplishments and reinforce transparency and accountability, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The schedule of activities for the 2025 celebration includes:
World Press Briefing: Friday, June 6
Special Juma’at Service: Friday, June 6
Church Service: Sunday, June 8
Youth Programme: Tuesday, June 9
Public Lecture: Wednesday, June 11
Presidential Broadcast and National Parade: Thursday, June 12
The IMC comprises key ministers, security chiefs, and senior officials from the SGF’s office. Notable members include the Ministers of Finance, Information, Foreign Affairs, FCT, and Interior; the Inspector-General of Police; the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS); and the Commander of the Guards Brigade.
The committee has been tasked with planning and implementing all approved activities, engaging relevant stakeholders, documenting the events, and ensuring the successful execution of the national celebration.
The 2025 Democracy Day will be Nigeria’s 26th since the return to democratic governance in 1999 and the sixth to be officially marked on June 12.
