The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar, has removed the village head of Mantau, Iliya Mantu, from his position following allegations linking him to the abduction and rape of a married woman in Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The victim, identified as Zulaihatu, was reportedly kidnapped alongside her infant last year by unknown assailants. She was held for several days during which she was allegedly subjected to repeated sexual assault. Her release was later secured after her family reportedly paid a ransom of N20 million.
After her ordeal, the woman’s family pursued legal action, during which the village head was allegedly identified as a key conspirator. The revelation sparked outrage among residents, leading to protests by youths in the Yarmaulu community who demanded justice and Mantu’s immediate removal.
Responding to the public outcry, the Emir announced Mantu’s dismissal on Monday, stressing that the emirate would not tolerate abuses of power or violations of citizens’ rights.
“This emirate has in the past removed its own appointees, and even a former Emir, Sarki Abdurrahman, once ordered the imprisonment of his son for wrongdoing,” Alhaji Faruk said during an address at the palace. “We will never condone the abuse of any individual, no matter who is involved.”
He reaffirmed the emirate’s commitment to justice and encouraged residents to report abuses through lawful means.
“If anyone has been wronged, even by my own child, they should not hesitate to bring their grievance to the emirate. We stand for justice,” he said.
The Emir added that a new village head will be appointed soon and urged the next leader to serve with fairness and integrity.
He also advised the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to uphold the rule of law at all times.
